Southern Superintendents Bradley manarWHITTINGTON – State Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) spoke to a group of Southern Illinois school superintendents about updates to a proposed school funding reform package Wednesday.

State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion) and state Sen. Gary Forby (D-Benton) hosted the event and also spoke about the proposal.

“We should begin and end every discussion in the state of Illinois with the statement that a child in Southern Illinois has as much need and potential as a child in another part of the state,” Bradley said. “I think Senator Manar understood that concern, and as a fellow downstate legislator, we will continue discussions until we fix this problem once and for all.”

Manar discussed Senate Bill 1, an updated version of last year's need-based reform package, Senate Bill 16.

"This plan was shaped by the input of superintendents from every part of this state. There is a clear need for a smarter, more effective way of funding schools," Manar said.

The proposal awaits debate in the Senate.
