april 7 3TAYLORVILLE – Over 75 residents from Taylorville and the surrounding area came to the Citizens for Education launch on Thursday night at Taylorville High School. Citizens for Education is a new coalition made up of local Christian county residents that support State Senator Andy Manar’s (D-Bunker Hill) plan to bring equity to the states school funding formula.

“Illinois has really ignored the grave disparity that people in Taylorville endure when it comes to education funding. This town hall signaled that they are fed up, and they are going to make their voices heard in Springfield,” Manar said. “In the grand scheme of things, advocacy and community engagement go a very long way, especially when you get a group that is this motivated to fight for change.”

Manar is the sponsor of Senate Bill 231, a proposed re-write of the state’s school funding formula that would funnel state money to districts based on the needs of their students. The current formula relies heavily on local property taxes to fund education, leaving schools in poorer with significantly less resources than those in more affluent neighborhoods.

At a recent press conference to introduce the new legislation Derek Lahey, a student at Taylorville High School, explained how the current formula impacts him and other Taylorville students.

“Due to lack of funding, a multitude on involved students like myself now face the elimination of all extracurricular activities,” Derek said. “These changes have been disheartening to see and hard to digest because I love my school and I love my community.”
