231 passesSPRINGFIELD- State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) issued the following statement in response to his school funding reform proposal passing the Senate by a 31-21-03 vote :

“Today the Illinois Senate took the lead in the effort to bring fairness and equity to the way Illinois funds its schools. We have taken this step before, but today is different. That’s because never before have so many leaders acknowledged that it’s the right thing to do. Never before has there been so much support.

We have been working on this effort for three years. At every step along the way we have taken suggestions from people on both sides of the aisle as well as the governor’s office. This plan encompasses all of those compromises.

Now that the Senate has committed to reform and improve the way Illinois funds public education, I look forward to seeing this advance through the House.

We are one step closer to ending the most regressive system of school funding that exists in our nation today. Students in Illinois deserve this change.”
