SGOP presserSPRINGFIELD—After a press conference by Senate Republicans calling for support of the governor’s plan to fund education in Illinois, state Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) issued the following statement:

“If we all recognize that our current funding formula is broken, why would the Republicans want to max out the money going into it? Let’s do the work and give taxpayers a better product. We have an obligation to provide the best quality education possible for our students, and until our formula is changed we are prevented from doing that.

“Eliminating proration alone will not help schools in Pana move their classrooms out of leaky hallways and from under stairwells into traditional classrooms. That is a systemic problem that needs to be dealt with directly through reforming the funding formula.

“The Senate Republicans’ commitment to education funding rings hollow. Not one of them supported the education budget the governor signed, the one that kept schools open this year. Their attempt to take credit for funding education is disingenuous.

“We have been working for years on this, so if my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are really committed to changing the formula, I encourage them to come and join the effort today.”
