BrammerSPRINGFIELD – Bill Brammer walked into the Union Baptist Church on Wednesday morning empty handed, but he walked out with answers, helpful information and a new veteran’s driver’s license.

“I try to go to any event for veterans. Today was very helpful,” Brammer said.

Brammer, a Korean War veteran, was able to get a driver’s license with the newly created veteran designation. The veteran designation ensures former service members receive services and benefits without needing to carrying additional cards or paperwork.

“I also got information on strokes, and they checked my blood pressure—it’s a little high,” Brammer said.

Brammer and other Springfield seniors received free health screenings and information for state and local programs during a senior fair hosted by State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) and State Representative Sue Scherer (D-Bunker Hill).

Manar and Scherer hosted the fair to give seniors a centralized, streamlined opportunity to ask questions, get resources and access free health screenings.

“It can be difficult to navigate all of the different programs available to help seniors get the care they need," said Scherer. "I'm thrilled that dozens of area seniors came out to our one stop shop to get free health screenings, information and answers to their questions.”

Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital along with the Central Counties Health Centers provided cholesterol, skin cancer and diabetes screenings for residents. These healthcare providers along with other organizations and programs shared information on services available to seniors.

Seniors had the opportunity to renew or update their driver’s licenses and state ID cards with the Secretary of State’s office. The offices’ mobile unit provided all the services of a standard DMV including vision and behind-the-wheel testing. The unit also printed free state ID cards for seniors over 65.

This is the third year Manar has hosted fairs throughout the district.
