roadconstructionRSPRINGFIELD – Two miles of badly deteriorating road on West Frontage Road between the Raymond exit and the Coalfield Rest Area along Interstate 55 will receive resurfacing this fall. Contracts for the project will be awarded as soon as Aug. 1, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The improvements represent a successful outcome after local officials and community members highlighted the need through letters to IDOT and a petition. Montgomery County Board Chairman Roy Hertel and county board members Connie Beck, Mike Webb and Megan Beeler refused to settle for a simple patch job, so they brought the problem to the attention of State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) and Rep. Wayne Rosenthal (R-Litchfield).

“I’m more than pleased that the Department of Transportation was responsive to our requests for a full resurfacing job.” Manar said.

“I would like to thank everyone who championed for this project, especially Thomas Martin for his petition drive,” said Rosenthal.  “His drive collected over 1,000 signatures, which I presented to IDOT District 6 engineers to highlight just how treacherous the conditions had become on this frontage road.  Road crews were literally out there every day patching the road in the hopes of keeping people safe.”

According to IDOT, the project will begin toward the end of September and will require the road to be closed for about 20 days.

“This road is currently in bad shape, but before another hard winter of deterioration this project will be complete thanks to a group of concerned citizens and local officials,” Manar said.
