Manar Grant Announcement Carlinville CourthouserCARLINVILLE – “Architectural jewel” is the phrase most commonly used by Macoupin County Sheriff Don Albrecht to describe the 140-year-old courthouse in Carlinville. Unfortunately, the courthouse is in need of some major repairs and the county does not have the funds to cover the cost. So Albrecht and other local officials spearheaded an effort, back in 2010, to find other revenue sources to help cover the costs.

“We just don’t have the revenue stream to cover the costs, so we have to look for funding alternatives,” Albrecht said.

One alternative, in the form of a $100,000 grant, has been secured with help from State Senator Andy Manar (D–Bunker Hill). Albrecht contacted Manar last fall for help to secure a grant to cover the cost of the first phase of restoration to the exterior.

“I spent years working with Sheriff Albrecht to preserve this historic structure during my time as Macoupin County board chairman,” Manar said. “It is truly one of a kind. This grant is an appropriate use of state resources as thousands of tourists, artists and architects from all around the county visit this landmark each year.”

“I appreciate Senator Manar’s work in securing grant funds for the Carlinville Courthouse,” Rosenthal said. “Due to years of disrepair, the courthouse is now in need of extensive renovations.  As one of Illinois’ architectural treasures, it is important that we preserve the Carlinville Courthouse for our future generations”

The courthouse, constructed in 1870, had a final price tag of $1.3 million, earning the courthouse its nickname “The Million Dollar Courthouse”. In addition to pieces of limestone cracking off the courthouse – halting pedestrian foot traffic around part of the exterior – significant work is needed to the roof and inside, including better accessibility, heating and ventilation work, and fixing the dome.
